If you’re like most people, you look at your smartphone and say, “why isn’t it faster?” or “why can’t it do . . . whatever.” It’s understandable that we take the incredible technology of smartphones for granted, considering the endless stream of exciting new innovations that are announced on a daily basis. But this technology is truly remarkable. A smartphone can do nearly the same things as a personal computer that is many times larger. And it can do it just about anywhere. To put it all into perspective, consider this: the iPhone 4S is literally four times as powerful as the Curiosity Mars Rover.
Curiosity CPU = 200 MHz, iPhone = 800 MHz
Curiosity RAM = 256 MB, iPhone = 512 MB
Curiosity SSD = 2 GB, iPhone = 64 GB (Data Storage)
That should create some appreciation for the power you hold in your hands.
