The trend of eliminated unlimited data plans started with wireless, and is now moving to landline carriers. Comcast announced that it will be phasing into a new usage-based billing system in place of its 250 GB capped system. The move is in response to the growing amount of data customers are using for movie streaming and other data-intense applications. It is likely that Comcast is just the first of many cable providers and carriers that will begin charging on a usage basis. It also appears that the FCC is supportive of the new billing approach. FCC Chairman, Julius Genachowski, recently said, “Usage-based pricing would help drive efficiency in the networks,” according to Reuters.
